Herbert Rucker is a native of Winfield, Kansas, Mary Ann's hometown. He was Mary Ann's boyfriend, but over the years in her absence when everyone thought she had died in the South Pacific, he became close to and romantically inclined to Mary Ann's best friend, Cindy. When she reappeared several years later, their families arranged for them to get married, a wedding that was disrupted by Gilligan and the Skipper, and left Herbert freed to marry Cindy.
