The Pedal-Powered Hacksaw was an invention of the Professor used to break into the telephone cable that washed up onto the Island through the Lagoon. Frustrated by the saws on the island to break through its metal shell, he invented the device to try using Mrs. Howell's diamonds to cut through the shell. Unfortunately, Gilligan is unable to pedal fast enough to generate the friction to break through. The realization does inspire the Professor to use the natural gases on the island to create a blowtorch that can melt through the shell.
